American Origami
An underclass of terrorism
If men were angels, no government would be necessary.
American history begins with the Enlightenment - an era that demanded scientific observation of the natural world against absolutist reigns of arbitrary power. What is man's natural state and what structure of government could allow the most freedom without us all killing each other? These were the questions pondered some 200 years ago.
At the very minimum, government places boundaries on freedom. Because man in his natural state is selfish. This was the founders' point of view, anyway. Some had lofty ideals about human nature, but no one could deny the power of natural, instinctive survival. Instead of utilizing law as a moral shepherd, better to embrace natural “sin” and find a way to harness rather than suppress it.
The result: capitalism.
Yes, it's ok to be selfish. In fact, it's more than ok!! Especially if it makes money.
The result: unions and labor laws.
Fast forward to the twenty-first century. Where everybody and their mother has a non-profit to fill a void in their ego… I mean to help a good cause.
Where a culture of insisting on helping everyone else except for self is encouraged (and federally funded) because pitying your inferior life skills is like “my purpose, you know?”
When business owners say they are catering to the customer but actually mean “I have no idea what I'm doing so I need you to tell me what to do.”
When police and public administrators confuse duty with “help” and have made themselves reluctant parents of unruly children.
When rights have become obsolete because public resources now solve those pesky little problems like right to trial or habeus corpus. Because that's only for like terrorists or whatever, right?
No, but that’s how you make one. 😘
